UNIL encourages international exchanges within its community, hosting an international network of academics and students. It is a member of the CIVIS European alliance of universities.
UNIL has defined five main objectives for its internationalisation drive:
UNIL sets up partnerships with selected networks and universities and encourages mobility for its students, as well as its teaching and technical staff, in order to achieve its objectives.
UNIL's international strategy calls for the establishment of preferred partnerships with a limited number of universities.
In addition to CIVIS, UNIL is an active member of a number of university networks that promote mobility on preferential terms.
Exchange agreement data lists for both students and teachers.
Switzerland plays a limited role in the Erasmus+ programme as a “Partner Country” as opposed to a “Programme Country” (see Erasmus+ activities available in Switzerland).
Switzerland has set up a parallel programme, called the Swiss-European Mobility Programme (SEMP). The programme offers conditions similar to Erasmus+ for exchanges aimed at students, interns, teachers and administrative and technical staff.
The Swiss National Agency Movetia provides the link between the European Union and Swiss universities.
The International Relations Office (SRI) implements UNIL's international strategy. Each Faculty appoints a mobility officer to act as the SRI's contact within the Faculty.
The Faculties appoint mobility advisers, who are responsible for informing students, particularly about the academic aspects of exchanges.
The Social Affairs and Student Mobility department (SASME) advises students on practical aspects and handles the administrative management of exchanges.
Once or twice a year, a ‘mobility lunch’ brings together mobility advisers from the Faculties, SRI, SASME and mobility officers who wish to exchange information.
An annual meeting with teaching staff is also planned.
